Nice move, GOP

When Peggy Noonan took leave from the WSJ to help Republicans throughout the country, she said her help was unnecessary for Pres. Bush because Karl Rove and the RNC had the best political minds already. Moves like this one bear out her belief:

The White House yesterday distanced itself from a political ad that questions John Kerry's Vietnam service and called on the Democratic presidential nominee to join President Bush in demanding an "immediate cessation" of all advertisements by outside groups.

Why is this brilliant? (1) Bush publicly distances himself from the Swifties even as Kerry's flaks continually try to link him with them -- something Kerry has FAILED to do viz. the MoveOn.org Bushitler ads and other Soros-backed attacks; (2) Bush calls on Kerry to adhere to the spirit of the campaign finance reform act they both supported and draws attention to the fact that Kerry is all but coordinating the outside-ad attacks on Bush whilst Bush is able to take the high road viz. Kerry, as seen from this quote by Scott McClellan:

"The president has been on the receiving end of more than $62 million in negative attack ads from shadowy groups," Mr. McClellan said. "The president thought he got rid of this kind of activity when he signed the bipartisan campaign finance reforms into law."
