The Bush record on stem cell research

The biggest canard in the presidential campaign is the claim that the Bush Administration has prevented stem-cell research. Only in the Democrat mindset can a refusal by the president to approve FEDERAL funds for FETAL stem-cell research become a ban on stem-cell research. Honestly, it makes no sense: no private funds have been barred from use in stem-cell research, instead the private sector can raise and spend every nickel it wants on stem cell research, both fetal stem-cell research and adult stem-cell research.

Furthermore, the federal government allows (and funds) stem-cell research on existing lines of embryonic stem-cells that have been "harvested". The Wall Street Journal (link above) exposes the disinformation campaign by Democrats, most notably Ron Reagan, in an editorial today. Thus, the Journal notes that

The President's answer was that there ought to be no restrictions on the private sector but that federal subsidies should be limited to lines that had already been harvested and should not be used to encourage the destruction of embryos. In short, it was a reasonable middle ground. It's worth noting that other countries, such as Germany, Ireland and Austria, ban even the private sector from creating embryos for stem cell research.
