Auld Reekie and modernity

Interesting essay on Edinburgh's contribution to modern society. The subtitle of David Denby's article is "How modern life emerged from eighteenth-century Edinburgh." The Monk was in Auld Reekie five weeks ago and liked it immensely. His only regret = not bringing home more juice of the (malted) barley.
