Happy 93rd birthday
... to the Republic of China which celebrated its 93rd birthday yesterday. Events on October 10, 1911 precipitated the fall of the Manchu Dynasty leading to the formation the Republic. The Republic of China, after its defeat by the Communists in the Chinese civil war, rules now in Taiwan. Despite corruption and chaos the Republic withstood (with Allied, mostly American, help) the Japanese onslaught in World War II. Unfortunately, it was unable after the war to muster the support to defeat Mao's insurgents which consigned a billion Chinese to horrific oppression for half a century.
