Ken Caminiti was a solid and occasionally spectacular baseball player. In 1996, he won the NL MVP (one of the few years Barry Bonds didn't either win or get robbed); in '98 he helped lead the underdog Padres past two 100-win teams to the NL pennant. But his career was cut short by injuries and drugs, and he lost his life to a bad heart ravaged by steroid use and (in the early '90s) cocaine. Cammy was only 41. I heard the news, and my jaw dropped.
The link above is the SI article from 2002 based on Cammy's experience that reported on the use and abuse of steroids by baseball players. This link is to the AP story reporting his death. Caminiti was the poster boy for the ravages of steroid abuse. Only 41, and the heart of an old man. Sad.
