Like 1998 all over again

Check it out: good pitching, scoring without relying on homers, and beating a good team. The Yanks of 2004 had a turn-back-the-clock day to 1998-99 against the A's. They actually got EIGHT innings out of starter Kevin Brown (0R, 4H, 2BB, 7K) and won 5-1. And they scored 5 runs without a dinger! Shock.

What is funny is that if the standings hold until next Tuesday, the Yanks will play two first-place teams in the span of three series. The A's came into this series up 1.5 over the Rangers; but the Rangers swept the Tigers while the A's lost two of three. The Rangers are now in first in the AL West and play the Yanks in the relaxing paradise of Texas in August next week.

Uh, the relaxing paradise part is sarcasm, for those whose detectors need new batteries.
