Today is the 113th anniversary of J.R.R. Tolkien Birthday, January 3, 1892. The professor may have been horrified at the sissified version of The Return of the King and the semi-wimpified version of The Two Towers that Peter Jackson made (although both were good movies and better DVDs in their extended versions, but Frodo's movie wimpiness was very disconcerting in comparison to the dogged determination he showed in the book). I'd hope he would have loved The Fellowship of the Ring, which is easily the best movie of the millenium so far. Thanks to Tolkien's gift to literature, January 3 is always a somewhat special day.
To celebrate: here are the NY Times's classic reviews, from 1954, 1955 and 1956, of the three Lord of the Rings books.
