Newsweek- Mouthpiece of the Left

Brent Bozell at townhall.com blasts Newsweek for the year end issue which profiled in a "Who's Next 2005" series both newly-elected Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum.

After the loving cover story on staunchly liberal Obama, a "news" report authored by Jonathan Alter (usually their predictably leftist in-house columnist), Newsweek reporter Howard Fineman profiled staunchly conservative Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. The contrast between the two stories, both in tone and in content, could not be more obvious.

Well as a fellow blogger once declared: "Always check the transcripts!", I did and the articles bear out exactly what Bozell has to say.

Descriptions of/related to Santorum:
- Mister Right
- professions of belief have been his ticket to the top
- point man on hot-button issues
- his shock troops
- combatively devout
- knee-capping style
- cultural militant
- heat-seeking missile

Descriptions of/related to Obama:
- Audacity of Hope
- electrifying speech
- uniquely qualified
- incredibly pragmatic
- confident, not cocky
- a gentleman and a scholar
- honest, God-fearing man
- transcending our often narrow-minded past

Perhaps Jonathan Alter is just a much better writer than Howard Fineman but the characterizations are spectacularly biased. Fineman, in addition, takes a snide swipe at Benjamin Franklin - the "bibulous deist" whose " picture appropriately hangs in the reception area." Read the original profiles online here.

I didn't see the hard copy but according to Bozell the photos that accompany the profiles are deeply skewed as well.
