US failings -- democracy in our own backyard

One of the Bush Administration's biggest failings has been ensuring democracy in the Western Hemisphere. This has been recently discussed in articles in recent issues of National Review with regard to the Venezuela-Cuba-Colombian FARC axis (by Otto Reich) and with regard to US relations with Nicaragua and the failure of the US to ensure that Sandinista elements the Nicaraguan military and government do not hamper Nicaragua's promise to turn over shoulder-fired Surface-to-Air Missiles, which have no purpose in Central America other than attacking commercial airliners.

Today Harold Meyerson (yes, a LIBERAL!) makes some good points about corruption among the ruling parties in Mexico and the Bush Administration's silence in the face of a 300,000 person demonstration against Mexican political malfeasance.
