Iran has unsealed its nuclear program and is pressing ahead despite the protestations of the U.S. and the E-3. James Robbins at NRO writes how some idiots at Foggy Bottom are arguing that a nuclear Iran might not necessarily be a bad thing - mini-Mutual Assured Destruction in the Mideast. Robbins notes how this is a bad idea in three ways:
1. Iran closes the Straits of Hormuz
2. Iran invades Kuwait and Saudi Arabia (via southern Iraq)
3. Iran uses Tiananmen/Soviet style tactics to crush a popular uprising
The question, of course, is how do we respond? Arguably very differently if the mullahs were nuclear.
What Robbins doesn't say is really more of a nightmare scenario:
The mullahs, who might not be rational but aren't stupid, provide a bomb to stateless terrorists to be detonated in Tel Aviv or New York.
We'd better be planning on how we would deal with these scenarios as we seem to be no stomach to stop the mullahs while we still can.
