New New York Yankees?

So here's the midseason spackle job the Yanks need to do with a pile of injuries:

Call up Robinson Cano and Sean Henn, the Yanks' top infield prospect and an untried pitching prospect, from the minors. Henn is making the jump from AA to the majors.

Release Steve Karsay.

Move Womack to LF.

Move Matsui to CF.

Move Bernie to part-time.

Cross fingers tightly whilst Johnson misses his next start (at minimum) with a groin injury (for those of you counting along at home, that's 40% of the opening day rotation in the tank).

What's it all mean? The AP article on the Yanks' win at Tampa says the shifting is temporary while Williams recovers from various ailments (his elbow is really bad off right now) but the ESPN Baseball Tonight crew indicate it's a desperate jump-start attempt for the Yanks.

The Monk view? A bit of both. Williams is a complete liability in centerfield as the BlueJs showed by running wild on him. Even Ricky Henderson prevented runners from taking the extra base better than Bernie has this year. Matsui played center two years ago as a rookie while Bernie recovered from a leg injury and may well have done that better than he played in left. Yankee folks said then that Matsui was the best centerfielder on the team. And the Yanks need to see what they have with Cano.

As for potentially using Henn and Wang in the rotation -- GET THOSE LONG RELIEVERS READY. Henn has never pitched above AA ball but he's dominated the Eastern League to date. Wang was sharp in his debut but had 0 strikeouts. Because Ramon Ramirez is still inconsistent, and the Yanks' pitching prospects are primarily in A-ball, Henn and Wang are the only guys semi-ready for the majors.

Uh, get well soon Randy.
