General Christian Estripeau, a spokesman for the French military hospital where he is being treated said: "Mr Arafat has not died."
He added: "His clinical situation has become more complex."
Arafat's death would likely be short-term negative for the USD and mean higher prices for oil and gold until the Palestinian situation resolves itself.
